BIOGRAPHY
Zeynep Ersen was born in Istanbul, Türkiye, in 1977. She spent her early childhood in Büyükdere, where the meeting of the sea and the forest shaped her earliest visual memories. The quiet balance of nature, together with her early encounter with painting, laid the foundation for the sensitivity that continues to define her work.
For Ersen, painting has never been merely a visual language; it has become a way of understanding both the world and the human condition. During high school, she studied with the painter Professor Teymur Rzayev Resuloğlu, an experience that transformed an intuitive artistic instinct into a more disciplined visual practice.
She later moved to Germany, where she completed her undergraduate studies as well as two master’s degrees at RWTH Aachen University. The analytical discipline of her academic education, together with her long-standing engagement with classical guitar and opera, continues to shape the rhythm, structure and balance of her artistic language.
After returning to Türkiye, writing, reflection and painting continued to nourish one another. Although painting remained outwardly quieter for many years, it never disappeared. Rather than an interruption, this period became one of silent maturation.
Today, Ersen approaches figurative and abstract painting not as separate disciplines but as two languages pursuing the same inquiry. Through the human figure she explores vulnerability, dignity and the possibility of transformation; through abstraction she investigates the same questions through colour, rhythm, movement and space.
Silence, witnessing, the relationship between the visible and the invisible, compassion, hope and trust are not simply recurring themes in her work but natural expressions of the way she perceives the world. For Ersen, painting does not offer definitive answers; instead, it creates an open space where viewers are invited to encounter their own inner truth.
Zeynep Ersen lives and works in Ayvalık, Türkiye, where she continues to develop her figurative and abstract paintings, working primarily with acrylic on canvas.

ARTIST STATEMENT
The moment I love most is standing before a blank canvas. Nothing has yet been decided. Everything remains possible. Perhaps that quiet possibility is what keeps calling me back.
As a child, I never questioned why I painted so much. Today I know that painting was my most natural language for meeting the world. Life led me through music, writing, academic study and unexpected trials. Yet every path eventually brought me back to the canvas.
When I returned to painting in 2024, I did not feel I was beginning again. I felt I was speaking a language that had been silent for a long time.
Whether I work figuratively or abstractly makes little difference to me. They are not separate worlds but two languages pursuing the same search. Sometimes that search appears in a human presence; sometimes it emerges only through colour, space and rhythm. The language changes, but the search remains the same.
I never try to control a painting. I begin by looking. By listening. Sometimes I spend hours searching for the place of a single colour, an empty space or a single brushstroke. When the painting quietly tells me, “enough,” I stop.
There are moments when I stand before a finished work and quietly ask myself, Did I really make this? What I feel then is not pride but gratitude. I believe some paintings arrive somewhere beyond the person who created them.
Life has taught me that human beings are both fragile and resilient. For that reason, I have no desire to judge anyone through my work. What interests me is the light that continues to survive despite everything. Perhaps that is where hope begins.
Painting is more than an artistic practice for me. It is the most honest conversation I know how to have. Every canvas seeks not to provide answers but to make room for an encounter. If someone leaves my paintings looking not only at my world but also at their own with greater care, then the painting has fulfilled its purpose.
If one day a child stands before one of my paintings, I do not hope they understand me. I hope they leave believing a little more deeply in themselves.
Perhaps then I will have left, in my own small way, a small piece of sky behind.
